'What was the first gig you ever went to?
"My first rock show was Suede on 'The Drowners' tour at the Duchess Of York pub in Leeds. It was a superhuman show full of drama. Brett Anderson wiggled his arse like a sexual duck. At such an impressionable age it inspired me to wear unbuttoned flowery shirts which caused my father great distress. I still have those shirts, but I'm in the army now."
Whats the best gig you've ever been to?
"New Order last year, The Velvet Underground at Glastonbury, Verve, pre The, in Bradford with Oasis supporting... But I go for Cope. Julian Cope in Oxford about two years ago was a show like no other. He was touring small venues to promote his book Head On / Repossessed. It was the very first time I'd seen Julian in the flesh, all daubed up, tights, platform boots and big balls. He didn't play any songs, but it was a rock 'n' roll show nonetheless. Have you ever banged rocks and shouted in a big valley with the echo blaring back at you? That's prehistoric rock 'n' roll." '
